Birding in Neighborhoods - North: Libbey Beach and Hastie Lake Parks

By Nancy Luenn

February 11: We started our field trip at Libbey Beach Park, taking advantage of the high tide that brought seabirds close to shore. The water was choppy, but the birding was great with the morning sun highlighting the seabirds. We saw numerous Horned Grebes, Harlequin Ducks and Buffleheads. A male Common Merganser flew past, close enough to see his bright red bill. A flock of Brants were spotted at a distance as were Surf Scoters and White-winged Scoters. We were thrilled when two pairs of Harlequin Ducks lighted on a rock near shore, giving us a lengthy and close view of their coloring and behavior. When a juvenile gull landed on the rock, all four Harlequins scattered.

We moved on to Hastie Lake Park. The tide was pushing waves against the breakwater, but the sun was warm and the wind had settled. The birding was equally good. We had excellent views of Surf Scoters and their colorful bills. We saw a Common Loon and a Red-breasted Loon. A Pigeon Guillemot floated by. The group was delighted to spot several Western Grebes

The highlight of the day was spotting six Long-tailed Ducks! They were away from shore, but when seen through a scope they were easy to identify. We could see the males’ distinctive long tails and brilliant white sides. Several were bathing and flapping their wings.

Some species were first time sightings for members of our group. It was a great day for birding!

Total species: 20

Birding in Neighborhoods North (BIN North) outings are on the second Wednesday of the month at 9 a.m. We meet in the parking area of the month’s destination. To be added to (or removed from) the monthly outing reminders email Nancy Luenn.
