Join us for a gentle morning outing through the old campground at South Whidbey State Park. Bring your curiosity as we will look and listen for any flora and fauna we can find, not just birds!
We will follow the paved campground road through the forest on a three quarter mile loop. The campground was closed years ago in order to protect the old growth trees growing amongst the campsites. We will see some of these large Douglas firs right along the road, as well as the twisted roots of a large big leaf maple. If folks are interested we can measure the diameter of an old growth Douglas fir along the road in the campground. The deciduous trees and shrubs will have dropped their leaves making it easier to observe our little flitting forest friends. We should encounter wintering forest passerines and hopefully a mixed flock or two. Birds to watch and listen for will include Pacific Wren, Song Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, Bushtit, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Varied Thrush. In addition to birds we are likely to encounter Pacific Banana Slugs, Douglas Squirrels and other residents of the moist forest. If we look carefully there is a chance we may find a blooming foamflower (Tiarella trifoliata) along the edge of the road.
A few pairs of loaner binoculars will be available to borrow. Pace will accommodate everyone in the group. There are a couple picnic tables along the loop where we can sit if attendees need to rest. The path is a single lane paved road, but the gradient is steeper than ADA regulations on the sections into and out of the loop. Those with strollers or motorized wheelchairs will be able to get back up the hill. Some self-propelled wheelchair users may need assistance. Areas of the road have leaves and algae that can be slippery when wet. The bathroom at the parking lot is ADA accessible. Hiking poles will be available for attendees to borrow.
Beginning nature appreciators and families with small children are welcome and encouraged to attend.
No pets, service animals only please.
Trip will go rain or shine, only strong wind cancels.
