Big Trees and Small Birds Nature Exploration at South Whidbey State Park

  • South Whidbey State Park 4128 South Smugglers Cove Road Freeland, WA 98249 (map)

Join us for a gentle amble through the old campground at South Whidbey State Park. We will follow the old campground road through the forest on a 3/4 mile loop. The campground was closed years ago in order to protect the old growth trees growing amongst the campsites. We will see some of these large Douglas firs right along the road, as well as the twisted roots of a large big leaf maple. The skunk cabbage should be in bloom and other plants will be showing signs of spring. Birds to watch for will include Pacific Wrens, Song Sparrows, Spotted Towhees, and others that now make the campground their home as the understory returns to the forest in the former campsites.

Loaner binoculars will be available for those who need them. The pace will be slow. The path is a single lane paved road, but the gradient is steeper than ADA regulations on the sections into and out of the loop. But those with strollers should be able to get back up the hill. Some self-propelled wheelchair users may need assistance. Areas of the road have leaves and algae that can be slippery when wet. The bathroom at the parking lot is ADA accessible. A small number of hiking poles will be available for attendees to borrow.

If you have questions, please contact the trip leader, Madrone Ruggiero.

No pets please. Service animals are welcome.

Meet at the main paved parking lot near the restrooms at 10:00 am. No pre-registration is required. March 9 is a State Parks FREE DAY. No Discover Pass is needed.
