Birding for Dollars - BIRDATHON 2026

Whidbey Audubon Society (WAS) encourages everyone’s help in raising funds for the scholarship fund and the general fund of WAS. This is a major fundraiser for WAS and the only fundraiser for the scholarship fund. But secretly it is just a great excuse to bird for a full 24 hours for your heart’s delight either with others or on your own.

All teams will need to register in the month of April.

Birdathon 2025 Is Taking Flight!

Birdathon is a friendly competition to see which team can identify the most species of birds in a 24-hour period. Modeled on the Global Big Day of Birding which is May 10 this year, Birdathon is similar to a walk-a-thon, but instead of miles, you pledge for each bird species identified. But we give you the first two weeks of May to pick the best day for you. This event also serves as our spring bird count, adding to the longitudinal data we have been collecting.

Wings over Whidbey Updates

Wings over Whidbey Bird Festival will take place on May 17 at Pacific Rim Institute from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Birding field trips will be offered on May 16 and 17.

Loons at Deception Pass

On January 25, more than 100 people participated in the annual Loon Field Trip to West Beach and Cranberry Lake led by Sarah and Steve Ellis. They spotted all three loon species, along with Surf Scoter, Common Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser, Red-necked Grebe, Horned Grebe, Pigeon Guillemot and many other birds.
