Successful Grateful Birds Book Launch Benefits Whidbey Audubon, LittleBIGFest

By Govinda Holtby

The October 26 Grateful Birds book launch was a great success! We had a turnout of more than 65 people and raised $815, which means that $407.50 will go to Whidbey Audubon and $407.50 will go to LittleBIGFest. Thank you to all those who attended and showed your support for birds and music.

A magical highlight of the event was when ten students from David Licastro’s ukulele class, along with guitarist and vocalist Stephen Barbour, took to the stage and played three Grateful Dead songs: Ripple, Friend of the Devil, and Bird Song. We passed out lyrics for Ripple, but many did not need it. Those who have the Grateful Birds book will know the songs are paired with the Great Blue Heron, the Wood Duck, and the American Goldfinch.

Cheryl Bradkin (pictured above with Mike White) was our librarian on deck, with bird specimens from Whidbey Audubon’s collection. For many folks, it was the first time they had an up-close look at the display.

If you are looking to get a copy of the book, I’ve submitted the book to the library, so it may show up in the Sno-Isle system soon. The book is also now on the IngramSpark bookstore website. (Search for “Grateful Birds”) The price is $16.99. It is more expensive online because the platform has a mandatory 40 percent surcharge (add tax and shipping, and you’re looking at $22.83).

We also plan on selling some books at the next Audubon meeting on November 13th. If you buy from us, it is cash only, but the book is cheaper, only $15 because we can cut out the middleman, and your dollars stretch further.
